Amélie Proulx
Amélie Proulx’s work emphasizes the constant flux of living things. Drawing upon the codes and techniques of arts and crafts, she pushes the limits of her materials while defying expectations and leaving space for freedom in her approach. The end result takes form in evocative shapes that exhibit an appealing fragility. Amélie Proulx has the rare talent of being able to strike a balance between rationality and intuition, willing to examine her practice through metonymic interplay, or mises en abyme. The element of sound that accompanies her kinetic and interactive works further demonstrates the artist’s great sophistication and attention to detail. Her labour and tireless research allow Amélie Proulx’s work to go beyond traditional ceramics, existing in a class of their own.
Amélie Proulx lives and works in Quebec City. In addition to teaching Ceramics at the Maison des métiers d’arts de Québec and Visual Arts at the Cégep de Sainte-Foy, she cofounded Les Ateliers du Trois Cinquième, a collective studio space for ceramists in Quebec City, in 2012.
Amélie Proulx has received numerous awards and bursaries, including the RBC Emerging Artist People’s Choice Award, presented at the Gardiner Museum in Toronto, the Starfish Properties Student Art Award at NSCAD University, and the Prix Albert-Dumouchel at ARPRIM, among others.
Her work has been displayed in a myriad of solo and collective exhibitions including Angles de dérive at CIRCA art actuel (Montreal), Glissements at Centre MATERIA (Quebec City), Poussières de langage at Anna Leonowens Gallery (Halifax), Hot Mud: A National Survey of Contemporary Canadian Emerging Ceramists at the Art Gallery of Burlington (Burlington), True North: Contemporary Canadian Ceramics at the Northern Clay Center (Minnesota), Once + Future: Contemporary Canadian Ceramics at Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery (Red Deer), De la porcelaine à l’oeuvre at Art Mûr (Montreal), and Division Gallery (Toronto).
Her works are also featured in public collections including those at the Art Gallery of Burlington (Burlington), the Permanent Collection of NSCAD University (Halifax), the Bibliothèque et Archives Nationale du Québec (Montreal), ARPRIM – Regroupement pour la promotion de l’art imprimé (Montreal), Concordia University’s permanent collection (Montreal), as well as in many private collections.
